Research methodology
Objectives of the research are:
  1. documentation of the spatio-functional shaping in the interwar buildings, since research so far concentrated from a point of view of history of art on the façade, not on the building plan;
    METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH
    Literature research, field trips, archive research.
    INSTRUMENTS
    Check lists (to be developed within the project), photography, preparation of functional schemes, drawings of spatial schemes.
  2. comparison of the common features and differences of the Modern multi-storey housing building for the middle class in various social conditions;
    METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH
    Set up, analogue to the decision tree in benefit-costs analysis, of a comparison tree, encompassing the features to be compared from the point of view of various disciplines involved.
    INSTRUMENTS
    Comparison tree, comparison criteria
  3. development of a model for the interior zoning of the flat;
    METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH
    Cybernetic approach of systemic analysis and synthesis.
    INSTRUMENTS
    “Raumbuch” (an inventory of spaces in the building); project management instruments like the operational structure and the operational plan
  4. a new definition of the character of a zone, as a result of various space-configuring textures;
    METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH
    Definition of the texture as “word” in the architectural language of the interior design of a flat, following Christopher Alexander’s (1977) “Pattern Language” approach and of the character of the zone using these “words”
    INSTRUMENTS
    The morphologic instrument of the texture
  5. determination of characteristics to be maintained when subsequent material and spatial layers redefine the space in frame of contemporary interventions.
    METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH
    Classification of the space-configuring elements according to their architectural and environmental value.
    INSTRUMENTS
    Data-tables, drawings with highlight of the elements of various values
  6. lessons learned from the solution given to the problems of the society in the Modern design of flats for coping with environmental problems today.
    METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH
    In the early Modern Movement not the aesthetics, but a solution to problems of the society stayed in foreground. Those problems related to socially suitable housing. Today such problems are environmental ones. A key for coping with environmental problems is given by Alexander (1977) in the participation of individual citizens using an architecture language, build on the basis of singular “words”, which describe the typical space-configuring elements of settlements, buildings and constructive elements. Such words can be the textures. Therefore the relationship between the architectural language and the response to the problems of the society will be investigated.
    INSTRUMENTS
    Social response indicators, environmental response indicators
  7. dissemination of knowledge. METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH
    Public presentation and reaction to feedback of findings and conclusions.
    INSTRUMENTS
    Active participation and co-organisation of conferences, publication in reviewed manner, web dissemination of results to the measures proposed as explained bellow.
